Either way ArmA III is not a difficult game to explain: it’s a super serious military simulator with a gigantic open world environment. Or you might know it as the spiritual successor to Operation Flashpoint, before Codemasters and developer Bohemia Interactive had a falling out.
If you have heard of the previous game it’s likely to be because of its zombie-themed mod DayZ (before you ask we’ve no idea when the promised standalone version is coming out). Few games are as unconcerned about attracting new players but ArmA’s confidence in its own appeal is not entirely misplaced… Even the name is impenetrable to those not in the know (it’s short for Armed Assault) and it’s the sort of game that thinks it’s okay to release its story campaign as downloadable content months after launch. The ArmA games are not meant for ordinary gamers.
From the series that brought you DayZ comes the most realistic military simulator in gaming, but does that make it any fun to play?
